1984. Estela is going through the convoluted stage of adolescence. Sex, love, friendship; everything seems so complicated. Her uncle, Carlos, is her hero, and the trip to California to visit him, her bigger dream. But everything falls apart when he comes back to Brazil looking skinny, weak and sick. Between crisis and discoveries, Estela has to face a reality that will change forever her way of seeing the world.
Director, actress and TV host, Marina Person graduated in Film Studies from the University of São Paulo. She worked as assistant-director, camera assistant and sound assistant before directing the documentary “Person” (2007) about her father, the filmmaker Luiz Sergio Person that had a worldwide premiere in the Locarno Film Festival and was also selected for the Trieste Film Festival in Italy.
As an actress she has starred in Carlos Reichenbach’s “Bens Confiscados” and Bruno Barreto’s “O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta” amongst others. Together with João Miguel, she headlines in Gustavo Rosa de Moura’s “Ballad of Return”.
For 18 years Marina worked as a TV host for MTV shows like CineMTV, Menina Veneno, Contato MTV, Neura MTV and Top Top. She has also hosted TV Cultura’s show Metropolis, as well as Canal Brasil’s O Papel da Vida. She currently hosts a radio show called Cinedrops, in the Estadão radio station as well as the weekly YouTube cooking channel, Marinando. “California” marks her first fiction feature as director.
