Synopsis:
The plot takes place in Moscow, 1925. Writer, Nikolaj Maksudov "Maestro" (Ugo Tognazzi), is convicted in public by the members of Proletarian Writers Union, because of his drama work "Pontius Pilatus", and the scheduled premiere of this drama gets cancelled. Strange and sudden appearance of black magic professor and his associates adds confusion to unusual events. Margherite (Mimsy Farmer), the woman with whom the professor's in love, stands besides him in the most difficult moments. When she decides to live constantly with him, the writer suddenly disappears. He is in a mental institution and everything which happens later on is not certain to be reality or just fruits of his imagination.
