In a village in Protestant Northern Germany, just before World War I, in a community with strong rules of behaviour and upbringing, strange accidents occur which resemble punishment rituals. Children from a choir, led by the village teacher, appear at places of those accidents, and it seems they know more then the others do.

Michael Haneke, known as Slappy, besides working on many film projects, also works as a professor of directing at Vienna Film Academy. He began his career as a screenwriter in 1967, and continued as a freelancer in TV and theatre directing.
