A movie by awarded Albanian director Besnik Bisha called Mao Ce Dun is going to be shown in Balkan Buster Selection. The story presents us the reality of the communist country of the seventies, from a wise and ordinary Gypsy’s perspective.
The story takes place in a small Albanian town whose well organized life gets disturbed by moving in of an unusual group people of Gypsy origin. The key cause of the disturbance is the birth of a boy. The baby came to this world as the ninth child, to happiness of the big Gypsy family, and the whole group. The question how a birth of a child can disturb the whole town that functioned so well before, comes to mind. However, the boy is not an ordinary one, far from it. His name is Mao Ce Dun...
Besnik Bisha was born in Tirana in 1958. He started his career in 1981 as an assistant director in the national film studio. He finished his studies of direction in Tirana, and after that he worked on numerous feature films and documentaries. He participated in many international film festivals and won many awards. His movie Mother’s Heart (1992) won Trofeo d’argento prize in Salerno, and his movie Bolero (1996) brought him three awards in European Film Festival in Saint-Etienne.
