The 27th of March 1941 is probably the most significant date in the XX century history of Serbia, both symbolically, and for its consequences. On that day the residents of Belgrade and almost all major cities in Serbia, (as well as the residents of Sarajevo, Podgorica and Skopje), went to the streets and made it clear that they are against the cooperation with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
Simultaneously, the officers belonging to the Air Force performed a military coup and replaced all those who signed the Tripartite Pact with the Axis powers. At that time, it was a unique event in Europe. The act itself drew Hitler’s wrath and his revenge.
While others invent their anti-fascist history, it seems as if the Serbia of today is ashamed of its anti-fascist past. The event of 27th March 1941 is being slowly forgotten…
