Cinema City awards

Gala closing ceremony of this year’s Cinema City Film & Media Festival begun last night at 21:00h at Katolicka porta open-air cinema. During these last eight days, we presented over 120 films, over 30 premieres within three competition selections and 11 review selections. Festival took place at five locations, at Katolicka porta, Serbian National Theatre, Dunavski park, Youth Theatre and Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina. These eight days Cinema City welcomed 80.000 visitors and clear skies, warm weather and quality programe greatly contributed to great attendance at open-air cinemas, one of trongest traits of Cinema City Festival. Audience of Novi Sad especially loved the appearance of Juliette Lewis who officially opened this year’s Festival and later performed with her new band at Petrovaradin fortress at musical opening of the Festival, on June 5th. From June 5-12 Novi Sad truly became cinema-city!

At Cinema City Film & Media Festival gala closing ceremony, on June 12th at Katolicka porta, starting at 21:00, Festival presented the following awards:

Jury members for Exit Point selection:

at final session, after reviewing all the films from competition programme, unanimously decided to award the following films:

1) GRAND PRIX

IBIS statuette and money prize for the best film from Exit Point competition selection goes to “Winter’s Bone”, directed by Debra Granik

Explication: We award “Winter’s Bone” with Grand Prix award for its integrity, honesty and authenticity in depicting a particular social milieu, which is done with highly distinctive and effective style.

2) BEST DIRECTING AWARD

IBIS statuette for best directing within competition selection Exit Point goes to Chinese director Chuan Lu for “City of Life and Death”.

Explication: We present Chuan Lu with the award for best directing for its historical significance and balance achieved between epic and individual, done through truly impressive, painful and realistic directing style.

3) BEST ACTOR AWARD

IBIS statuette for best actor within Exit Point competition selection goes to Emir Kusturica for his role in “Farewell”

Explication: We award Emir Kusturica with this recognition for his subtlety and humanity in demonstrating different traits of one’s personality.

4) BEST ACTRESS AWARD

IBIS statuette for best actress within Exit Point selection goes to Lola Duenas for her role in “Me Too”

Explication: We present this award to Spanish actress Lola Duenas for the warmth she expressed and a wide range of emotions displayed in this film.

5) SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS

Jury for Exit Point selection presents two special recognitions this year:

- the plaque for artistic contribution within Exit Point selection is awarded to Mohamed Al-Daradji for “Son of Babylon”

Explication: This special recognition for artistic contribution is dedicated to brave and poetic depiction of influence of war on an individual.

- The Plaque for extraordinary contribution in acting is awarded Pablo Pineda for “Me Too”

Explication: Special recognition for extraordinary contribution in acting is awarded Pablo Pineda for humanity, strength and wittiness he built into his character.

International jury for National Class competition selection:

at final session, after reviewing all the films from competition programme, unanimously decided to award the following films:

1) GRAND PRIX

IBIS statuette and money prize for the best film from National Class competition selection goes to Srdjan Koljevic’s “The Woman with a Broken Nose”

Explication: For extraordinary production, easiness of communicating with the audience and exceptional artistic bearing. This film is a witty comment on a life in multicultural Belgrade of today.

2) BEST DIRECTING AWARD

IBIS statuette and money prize for the best directing in National Class competition programme goes to Sasa Hajdukovic for “32nd of December”

Explication: Award for best directing goes to a man who is not afraid to speak up, doing so with captivating sincerity. With his directorial debut, this director already shows extraordinary capability for depicting significant social and existential problems, with his approach never losing its youthful bluntness.

3) BEST SCREENPLAY AWARD

IBIS statuette and money prize for the best screenplay from National Class competition programme goes to screenwriter of “The Woman with a Broken Nose”, Srdjan Koljevic.

Explication: For intelligent plot and witty dialogues, interesting and convincing characters who easily won sympathies of the audience.

4) BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

IBIS statuette and money prize for best actor in National Class competition programme goes to Nebojsa Glogovac for his role in “The Woman with a Broken Nose”.

Explication: for original and striking portrayal of a refugee in insufficiently friendly environment who, through imposed father role manages to regain his humanity.

5) BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

IBIS statuette and money prize for best actress in National Class competition programme goes to Nikolina Djordjevic for her role in “32nd of December”.

Explication: For a way of depicting desperation, a woman without a hope whose own cry for love lead her into a no-way-out situation.

6) SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTION

Special contribution, a plaque for artistic contribution within competition selection National Class is presented to actor from “Devil’s Town”, Vlastimir Velisavljevic.

International jury for Up to 10.000 bucks competition selection:

1. Dunja Kusturica, president of the jury

2. Ognjen Glavonić

3. Gauthier Morax

at final session, after reviewing all the films from competition programme Up to 10.000 bucks, unanimously decided to award the following films:

1) BEST FILM – IBIS statuette and money prize for best film from Up to 10.000 bucks competition selection goes to Nikola Ljuca’s “Thursday”.

Explication: For the intensity of vision, personal and sincere story, woven with deft and confident narration. Excellent photography and editing as well as maturity of director and his film associates make this film a powerful and stirring achievement.

The jury also presents three equal recognitions

2) Special recognition for directing – a plaque is presented to Dane Komljen’s “A already am everything I want to have”

Explication: for the story presented through exciting form and mature, measured framing by the author with already vivid, precise and original style.

3) Special recognition for original approach – a plaque is awarded to Louise BotkayCourcier’s “Useless Landscape”.

Ecplication: For interesting handling of time through space and pictures, as well as mute singing of lonelyness

4) Special recognition for a promising director – a plaque is awarded to Zoran Tairovic for “Little Red Riding Hood”

Explication: For immense energy and fresh perspective of author’s world as well as for wild spirit of invention, clear attitude and game which carry the entire work.

Audience award for best film at Cinema City Festival was presented to Srdjan Koljevic’s “The Woman with a Broken Nose” which screened within National Class selection.

Critics and journalists at 3rd Cinema City decided to recognize Srdjan Koljevic’s “The Woman with a Broken Nose” as the best domestic feature.
