Film programme

The backbone of the Cinema City Festival is comprised of competition and review selections, which present the audience with the latest film accomplishments, but also great authors and significant works of film art. The review programme presents some of the most important films of the year, music films, homage to domestic authors, best films from the region, must-see films, and latest accomplishments of the most appealing foreign cinemas.

The review programmes from the previous years introduced the audience of the Cinema City festival with the works of the renowned American animator Bill Plympton; presented the body of work of Guillermo Arriaga, one of the most original storytellers of today; famous German author Andreas Dresen; Béla Tarr; Šarūnas Bartas; Dorota Kedzierzawska; as well as films signed by Aleksandar Saša Petrović, Žika Pavlović, Miodrag (Mića) Popović, Želimir Žilnik, and other notable artists from the country and abroad.

NATIONAL CLASS / Domestic film competition selection

The National Class presents the best achievements of the national cinema, exclusive premieres of domestic films and numerous film authors and films crews from the country. At the screenings of the films from the National Class selection the visitors of the festival will be able to greet some of the most significant names from the Serbian cinema.

Up to $10,000 / Competition selection of films shot with a budget of less than $10,000

One of the most interesting film programmes at the Cinema City festival is Up to 10,000 Bucks competition selection, which gathers films that have been shot with a budget of less than 10,000 USD. Authors from all over the world compete to enter this selection, and every year it draws ever-growing number of young film authors, the future stars of the world cinema. As is tradition, the selector of this programme is the winner of the previous edition of the festival.

360° / Review of latest accomplishment of the world cinema

This year the panoramic programme of 360o selection will present the latest accomplishments of the independent production. Peculiar film settings, interesting heroes and their gripping stories, life’s crossroads and unforeseeable U-turns are what makes this programme so appealing to the Cinema City audience.

FRESH DANUBE FILMS / Review of the best first and second films from the Danube region

The Fresh Danube Films project is a creative result of the eponymous project, which was supported by the European Cultural Foundation from Holland. This selection screens the first and second films signed by the authors from the Danube region.

PLANET ROCK / Review of films on music stars and iconic bands

The Planet Rock selection screens the films inspired by music. The expansion of this type of film has been tremendous in the several years. Great directors, actors and photographers have created films on music stars and legendary bands, whose exciting biographies and careers continue to attract public attention.

RESPECT TO… Foreign Film Author / A retrospective of a foreign author

So far, this selection has presented the works of Guillermo Arriaga, two-time BAFTA nominee and winner of the Best Script Award at Cannes 2005; Lee Chang-Dong, the renowned South Korean director, winner of 2008 Special Director’s Prize at the Asian Film Awards; Andreas Dresen; Béla Tarr; Šarūnas Bartas; Dorota Kedzierzawska; Eran Riklis, etc.

RESPECT TO… Domestic Film Author / A retrospective of a domestic author

This selection presents the retrospectives of some of the most significant domestic authors. So far it has screened the films of some of Serbia’s most iconic filmmakers – Aleksandar Saša Petrović, Žika Pavlović, Miodrag (Mića) Popović, Želimir Žilnik, one of the most notable artists of Yugoslavian Black Wave.

BELDOCS @ CINEMA CITY / Review of most notable documentaries

Cinema City 2014 will present a selection of the most notable accomplishments screened at the International Documentary Film Festival Beldocs in Belgrade.

CC SHORTS / Review of award-winning short films

CC shorts is a selection of most interesting, most original award-winning short films.

SPECIAL SCREENING / Special screenings of the festival

This programme presents the films screened in honour of the members of the jury, and films screened at the opening and closing ceremonies.
