Exceptional Story of Growing up, with a Brilliant Soundtrack: Film California in the 360° Section

Great Storyline, Intense Emotion and the New Wave Hits in Open-Air Cinema

The private, social, political and musical evolutions and revolutions of the 1980s, as seen from the perspective of a seventeen-year-old girl, give this film a marvelous rhythm and emotion. Along with the great storyline, the music plays a pivotal role in creating a credible atmosphere. The soundtrack consists of world hits performed by the music celebrities who defined the lifestyle of the ’80s: The Cure, David Bowie, New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, and Brazilian bands such as Titãs, Paralamas do Sucesso, Metrô and Kid Abelha.

“A teenage girl Teca comes from a wealthy family, which lives a neat and harmonious life in the Brazilian metropolis in the ’80s. However, their family plans are upset by the bohemian (childish) behavior of her uncle who lives in California – which young Teca sees as the synonym for abundance and the most beautiful fantasies. Yet, after a sudden turn of events, Teca finds herself facing the bitter reality, and learns that the adult life is nowhere near as pretty as that from her girlish dreams, and that she must focus on her own self and emotions as something of utmost importance,” the 360° program selector Petar Protić asserts.

Director Marina Person is also known as an actress and television personality. She directed Persona, a documentary about her father, director Sergio Luis, which had its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, and was subsequently screened at the Trieste Film Festival in Italy. She has hosted a number of MTV shows such as CineMTV, Menina Veneno, Contato MTV, Neura MTV and Top Top, and also worked as a presenter on TV Cultura’s program Metropolis, and on Canal Brasil’s program O Papel da Vida. She is currently hosting the radio show called Cinedrops and the YouTube cookery channel Marinando.
